Spring break IV: Tokyo
In a move that is intended to thaw Chinese-Japanese relations into melty loving goodness, I've been despatched to Japan for a week. Cue the demented fangirl squealing:
This is a serious mission so there'll be no wandering-ennui-Lost-in-Translation type crap. I have a deep understanding of the Japanese culture based on perverse anime and will be able to set a few things straight like:
- correcting some of the glaring errors in Japanese textbooks
- enlightening Junichiro Koizumi that his favourite dance partner is quite the asshat.
- helping Crown Princess Masako deal with her longtime depression over the Crown Prince's shortcomings
- and finally, instructing teen idols in the art of flaunting their spirit fingers

BTW, finally saw 2046. Found it less painful than his other movies. Q: Do his movies play in China? Because they must have a very warped view of the West if they do
ooooohhh you'll have so much to post about once you're back from tokyo!
I would imagine that 2046 and his other movies get screened in China, unless they contain politically sensitive messages.
How can I get my hands on a copy of 2046? I heard this director's stuff is great, but it's terribly hard to find.

If you're in America, you can get it via Netflix. He has a brilliant visual style, like the Almodovar of Hong Kong, but without the humor. His films are all gorgeous to look at, but nothing ever happens, & does so for a loooooong time. 2046 has a pulp angle (Faye Wong plays an android), so it's less dull than his other films. I was mesmerized by the style alone for the first 20 minutes, but then it just settles into another elliptical film where nothing happens.
Faye Wong as an android, that wouldn't be much of a stretch for her.
Amen to that.
